ZEC is mostly a CEX token (Zcash is its own L1, not an ERC-20)

Overview:

Zcash ($ZEC) is a fork of Bitcoin currently being positioned as "the better Bitcoin" by a group of credible voices, Barry Silbert and Multicoin Capital chief among them, and the pattern they are running is structurally the same playbook Bitcoin Cash ran in 2017. Bitcoin Cash did not overtake Bitcoin, and ZEC most likely will not either. The reason to track ZEC is not that the thesis wins in the end. It is that recognizing the pattern while the narrative wave is still being built is where the price action lives, the same way BCH's 2017 run delivered real moves even though the "true Bitcoin" claim ultimately failed. That wave is measurably in motion: ZEC trades around $825 as of August 24, 2026, an 8-year high, up roughly 1,839% over the trailing year and about 71% over the last 30 days, ranking #12 by market cap at about $13.9B (CoinGecko, pulled 2026-08-24). The structural setup makes the pitch feel credible at first glance: Zcash literally forked the Bitcoin Core codebase in 2015-2016 and inherits Bitcoin's monetary DNA wholesale, the same 21M supply cap, the same Proof-of-Work mining, the same halving schedule, with zk-SNARK privacy bolted on top.

The roster of loud backers changed this summer, and the honest ledger matters. Arthur Hayes named ZEC a core holding on May 22, 2026, then sold his entire position on June 5, 2026 after a researcher disclosed a critical vulnerability in the Orchard shielded pool (full story in Extra). He has not publicly re-entered as of this update. Barry Silbert keeps pushing the "ZEC should be worth at least 1% of Bitcoin's market cap" framing; note his DCG is the parent of Grayscale, the sponsor of the ZCSH ETF, so the loudest voice also owns the product. Multicoin Capital's Tushar Jain disclosed a "significant position" on May 6, 2026, accumulated quietly since February 2024, framed as "a return to the cypherpunk ideals crypto was founded on." Meanwhile the usage story kept growing through the bad news: the shielded pool (ZEC held in encrypted addresses) sits at roughly 4.36M ZEC, about 26-30% of circulating supply depending on the day, up from 8% in 2024. Billions of dollars of ZEC is being used as private money, not just held as a ticker.

What $ZEC does: ZEC is the native asset of the Zcash chain, used to pay transaction fees and mined into existence via Proof of Work. There is no buyback, no burn, and no fee share: transaction fees go to miners, so nothing mechanically routes value to holders. The value case is monetary, not cash-flow: a hard-capped 21M supply plus growing demand to hold and move money privately, with the pending ZCSH spot ETF as the institutional access catalyst. The NU7 coinholder vote starting August 25, 2026 includes proposals that would change the issuance curve itself (see Extra).

Analogy:

Think cash in a sealed envelope vs. a debit card on a public spreadsheet. Every Bitcoin transaction is the public spreadsheet, anyone can look up every address you have ever sent to and how much. A shielded Zcash transaction is the sealed envelope: the post office can confirm it was a real, valid envelope (not a counterfeit), but no one ever sees what is inside.
