$TAO is mostly a CEX-listed token (Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, KuCoin). It runs on its own dedicated chain, so there is no main DEX pool. Trading happens primarily on centralized exchanges.


Overview:

(”the ai version of bitcoin”) Bittensor ($TAO) takes Bitcoin's mining idea and makes it programmable. Bitcoin pays miners for solving math puzzles that only secure the network. Bittensor pays miners for producing useful AI work instead. The team calls it Proof of Useful Work: rather than mining for hashes, you mine for intelligence. Anyone in the world can run an AI model and submit answers, other independent operators ("validators") score whose answers are best, and the highest scorers earn $TAO. TAO copies Bitcoin's money design on purpose: a hard cap of 21 million coins, with about 11 million issued so far (roughly 9.6 million circulating once you subtract coins the network has recycled or burned) and halving events that cut new issuance in half. The first halving hit on December 12, 2025, cutting new supply from 7,200 to 3,600 TAO per day. At today's price near $193 that is still about $696,000 of brand-new TAO minted every day, roughly $254M per year, and that issuance is the single most important number in the whole TAO story: it is what pays all the miners and validators, and it is also the new supply the market has to absorb. In Bitcoin terms, the network sits at roughly its 2013 point on the supply curve. The network is split into 127 active subnets (the chain caps slots at 128), which work like neighborhoods. Each subnet runs its own competition to mine a different AI product (language models, image generation, financial prediction, and more), and each subnet has its own token with its own 21 million cap. To get a subnet's token you either mine it or stake TAO to obtain it, so there is a direct economic connection between TAO and every subnet, something Ethereum and Solana do not have between their gas coin and the tokens built on top of them. Because of that link, holding TAO is a bit like holding an S&P 500 of all the subnets, while picking the right single subnet can do far better. The largest subnet token (Chutes, the network's AI inference engine) is worth about $88M, the second largest about $59M, and it falls off quickly from there (live from taostats, July 30, 2026).

What $TAO does: AI workers ("miners") and judges ("validators") earn TAO for producing and scoring high-quality AI outputs across the network's 127 subnets, and to get into any specific subnet you stake TAO, which swaps it into that subnet's pool. TAO pays holders no revenue share and burns no fees today; the value accrual story is Bitcoin-style scarcity (hard cap plus halvings) combined with the fact that TAO must be bought and locked up to take part in any subnet, so more subnet activity means more TAO demand.

Analogy:

Bittensor is like a city full of science fairs. Each science fair (a "subnet") focuses on a different topic: one for image-recognition AI, one for text-generation AI, one for financial-prediction AI, etc. Anyone in the world can set up a booth at any fair (a "miner", meaning someone running an AI model). Judges (called "validators") walk around scoring whose booth is best, and the more skin-in-the-game (TAO staked) each judge has, the more weight their scoring carries. Whoever runs the best booths each day gets paid in TAO. Anyone in the world can then walk up to any booth and pay in TAO to use that AI model.
