Aerodrome ($AERO) is the main place where people swap tokens on Base — Coinbase's own blockchain. A "DEX" (decentralized exchange) is basically a self-service version of Coinbase: instead of Coinbase manually approving every coin you can trade, a DEX lets you swap any token directly from your wallet. Aerodrome is the largest DEX on Base by far — it holds more than half of all Base DEX trading volume — and it's been publicly endorsed by the Coinbase / Base core team. The $AERO token pays liquidity providers, controls governance, and shares in protocol revenue (the platform is pulling in approximately $100M annualized in fees and revenue as of early 2026). Big news as of Q1–Q2 2026: Aerodrome and its sister project Velodrome are merging into a unified protocol called "Aero", which is set to launch on Ethereum mainnet and Circle's new "Arc" chain in Q2 2026 — pushing the protocol well beyond its Base-only roots.
What $AERO does: AERO pays liquidity providers across all the trading pools on Aerodrome. Holders can lock their AERO into veAERO (vote-escrowed AERO) to vote weekly on which pools get the next round of AERO emissions, earning 100% of trading fees and bribes from the pools they vote for — effectively a yield-share for active participants.
Analogy:
Think of Aerodrome as the main marketplace in the center of "Base City", with Coinbase as the city's mayor publicly recommending it to all visitors. Coinbase the exchange only lists carefully-vetted "safe" coins. But most people also want access to the thousands of newer, smaller, riskier tokens. Instead of putting those directly on Coinbase, Coinbase funnels users into Aerodrome — the official marketplace on its own chain — so they can still find everything else without Coinbase being the one curating it. $AERO is the local currency of that marketplace, used for governance, voting, and getting a cut of the fees the marketplace generates.
Ease of Use:
Smooth interface, integrated directly into the Coinbase Base App so retail users can swap tokens without leaving the Coinbase ecosystem. Clear liquidity-management tools make it more approachable than most DEXs for non-developers.
Hair-on-Fire:
Coinbase has ~110M+ verified users and is the largest US crypto exchange — but it only lists ~250 coins because of regulatory caution. Meanwhile, there are tens of thousands of smaller tokens that those users want exposure to (memecoins, AI coins, new launches, etc.). Aerodrome is the bridge: Coinbase users get to access the rest of crypto without Coinbase having to take on the regulatory risk of listing it directly. The platform pulls in around $100M annualized in revenue off this dynamic.
